Creating a New Roadmap

How do we know how to get to where we’re going without a map to guide us?  Without a roadmap, we may be driven by external events and feel we have no control over our own emotions and our life.  Maps can give us a tool to navigate toward our goal.  Different maps give us different information to help guide us.  Your current map may not be getting you where you want to go.

Continuing with our metaphor of the map, suppose we wanted to go to Barton Springs and our map showed the roads to travel but none of the weather or traffic conditions.  We may find ourselves stuck in traffic gridlock and frustrated or swimming in the middle of a hail storm.

The ultimate map-maker is the mind.  At any moment we may be operating from past, present, or future maps.  How do we know which one is relevant?  I teach clients how to increase the complexity of existing maps and develop new ones. As a result, clients have a greater ability to make day-to-day informed decisions as well as to modify their own decision-making process as new information becomes available.  The flexibility to adjust to the environment is a life-long, ongoing process and the hallmark of high achievers.

Keys to Therapeutic Work

  • Deep listening: Therapeutic listening includes hearing what is said overtly as well as what may be difficult to talk about. I work to create a safe space for those hard-to-talk-about issues.
  • Present moment awareness: Change in perception takes place in the present. People often begin by talking about the past or future, and then we work to see how they can impact their present awareness of those concerns.
  • Mind-body awareness: I teach clients to observe their thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations in the present. The information needed for healing is available within each person’s mind-body system. Oftentimes people are not aware of the systemic relationship of thoughts, feelings, and physical reactions.
  • Skills development: Learning how to perceive and work with one’s own thoughts and feelings is empowering. Empowerment gives one a way to walk gracefully through one’s life.

Insurance

I am a provider on the Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance panel. You will need to contact me to see if I am accepting new insurance clients.

I am considered an out-of-network provider for many other plans. Check with your individual plan for coverage. I can provide you with an invoice for the services that you receive that you can submit to your provider for reimbursement. The amount that the insurance company reimburses you will depend upon the particular insurance company and plan.

A Note on Insurance

Although it may sometimes be financially necessary to use insurance benefits to pay for therapy, there are several important factors to consider:

First, all insurance claims require a medical diagnosis. This can affect or limit future insurance coverage and may inhibit certain employment opportunities.

Your private information, even under new privacy policies, may be required from the insurance company for reimbursement.
